Reviewing ‘Kingdom Come: Deliverance’ 6 Years Later

Occasionally, Steam offers free weekends to try out a game. That’s when I happened across Kingdom Come: Deliverance (2018). I love a good medieval RPG setting and figured, why not give it a try?

Boy, is it medieval in both enjoyable and frustrating ways.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance’s introduction/tutorial phase is well hidden in an immersive first look at our hero Henry’s life. It takes place in a small settlement that will resemble other towns later on. Mechanics like conversations, appearance, fighting, and more are introduced organically — and in a fun way.

While I knew it was the tutorial phase, the set-up was a dramatic, memorable, and compelling start to Henry’s adventure. It tells you exactly what kind of game it is in this short time. Frankly, I was hooked.

The game is set in the 1400s Kingdom of Bohemia, during the reign of King Wenceslaus IV. It also doubles as a refresher on this period and its ways of life, from religious greets rather than simple hellos to specialized craftsmen and traders opposed to all-encompassing general stores. Talking ill of nobles as a lowborn gets you into fights and thrown…
