As the series’ plot starts to come together, it squanders its potential and makes for tame, bland television

Game of Thrones this ain’t.

While the previous series led by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss might have ended poorly, it still deserves to be commended for how adeptly it wove together its intricate storylines and large roster of characters. What’s even more impressive is how lived-in that fictional world felt, as well as the incredible characterisation on display.

3 Body Problem is a far less memorable show in comparison, with its high-concept ideas hardly ever being implemented in an interesting way, while the series’ characters are still painfully underdeveloped as it nears the end of its first season. For starters, there is nothing particularly interesting about this group of former classmates forced to contend with the potential destruction of the planet. Why they’re connected in any way, what their dynamics are, how they navigate their lives in the face of this crisis… none of it feels like it has any overarching style, selling point or unique quality.

The humour is a constant disappointment, and is never used to differentiate its characters…
