The Night Eaters, particularly the first book, She Eats the Night, continually shows up on recommendation lists for dark fantasy and horror graphic novels. Every time I came across the cover, with its intricate details, weaving lush plant life together with bloodshed and dark imagery (for the first book), I knew these were books I needed to read.
Created by author Marjorie Liu and illustrator Sana Takeda (who also created the critically acclaimed Monstress series, which I have not yet read, but also features stunning artwork on its covers and likely within), The Night Eaters is a horror trilogy, focusing on a Chinese American family in a world full of hidden monsters. Both of the current books provide an intimate, nuanced narrative combined with some of the most beautiful, rich, and intricate artwork I’ve seen in a graphic novel.
