Just when I was feeling iffy about James Gunn’s newly appointed title of DC Studios’ co-CEO, he completely eradicates my doubts with the surprisingly epic and emotional punch-packing Vol. 3. The long-awaited threequel closes out Gunn’s lengthy tenure with Marvel Studios as well as provides a satisfying conclusion (?) for everyone’s favorite team of intergalactic misfits.

Perhaps my favorite thing about the flick is that it never lets up with the emotions, which Gunn failed to balance in Vol. 2. Seriously, if you have any semblance of a heart, you’ll be crying one minute followed by a burst of laughter the next — something Gunn seems to excel at more often than not.

The action is nothing to scoff at either. Both the film’s practical effects and CGI seamlessly blend to make for a visually engaging two and a half-hour blast of a time.

The cast here is also immaculate with Chukwudi Iwuji dominating the screen as the psychotically misguided High Evolutionary, and this time around, everyone’s favorite talking raccoon, Rocket, is rightfully front-and-center.

While not exactly the “best movie since Endgame” as some are boldly claiming, I’d be hard pressed to ignore Vol. 3’s strong contention as the best of the trilogy if not at least a top tier MCU flick. I truly hope we get to see more of the Guardians in the near future which, is a testament to how much I f***ing love these characters. But for now, I’ll be crying in the corner, albeit with a huge smile on my face.
