If you’ve read my book research post you can see I’ve consumed multiple Phaidon products recently in the name of research for my book — DE$IGN — A guide to wealth & success in design.

One thing I’ve definitely taken away from this research is I TOTALLY NEED FULL PAGE QUOTES! Like Picasso said: good artists copy, great artists steal. So, I’m stealing their technique and dropping some quotes throughout the book. Below are a collection of inspiring quotes I’m thinking of adding:

— Paul Rand

“Design is so simple. That’s why it’s so complicated.”

— Paul Rand

“The public is more familiar with bad design than good design. It is, in effect, conditioned to prefer bad design, because that is what it lives with. The new becomes threatening, the old reassuring.”

I asked him if he would come up with a few options. And he said, “No. I will solve your problem for you. And you will pay me. And you don’t have to use the solution. If you want options, go talk to other people. But I’ll solve your problem for you the best way I know how. And you use it or not. That’s up to you. You’re the client. But you pay me.” And there was a clarity about the relationship that was refreshing.

— Steve Jobs on working with designer Paul Rand on the NeXT logo
