An Interview With…My Coffee Mug

The Woodsy is pleased to introduce our “Interview With…” Series, where we’ll be digging deep with our favorite inanimate objects. First up: co-founder Dena’s coffee mug.

The Woodsy: Thanks for being with us today, Coffee Mug. I know this is a busy time of year for you, so I can’t tell you how much we appreciate it.

Coffee Mug: My pleasure. Fall is always a crazy time for all mugs, but I’m excited about what you guys are doing so of course I had to make time.

TW: Thanks! We’re excited too, and it’s really an honor to have you with us for launch. Let’s get right to it, shall we? Growing up, did you always think you’d be a coffee mug, or did you have other aspirations?

CM: Well, I’m ceramic, so I didn’t really “grow up” per se. But yes, I’ve always had an inkling that someday I’d be a receptacle for coffee.

TW: Why coffee?

CM: What do you mean?

TW: Like, why not tea or cider or hot chocolate?

CM: I’m sorry, I don’t understand the question.

TW: Let me rephrase. Of all that paths that a mug can take, how do you think you ended up as a coffee mug?

CM: I mean, nothing against any of those other drinks but that’s just not where my heart is. Like, I know a lot of people really love tea and cider and whatever, but I’ve never really felt called to be filled with them, you know? I wouldn’t choose that. I just don’t think it’d be as satisfying.

TW: So no one has ever used you for anything other than coffee?

CM: No.

TW: Not even once? Like, what if someone had a sore throat and wanted tea, or what if there was no coffee in the hou-

CM: Next question.

[editor’s note: at this point, there was a conversation pause as notes were consulted]

TW: What do you like best about being a coffee mug?

CM: The way people look at me when they’re about to take a drink. I feel like I could awaken a sleeping giant.

TW: Ha! That’s a great image. How much coffee do you think it would take to a waken a sleeping giant?

CM: Well, how strong is the coffee?

TW: Um, really strong?

CM: 20 cups.

TW: Amazing. Let’s switch gears. You’re originally from California, right? Can you tell us what it’s like to be a to relocate here as a mug?

CM: That’s right, I was purchased in California. I’ve now traveled across state lines and lived in three different homes. I’m one of my owner’s most loyal beverage containers. The need for oversized coffee mugs like me is much higher here, and I feel like I’m making more of a difference. There’s no place I’d rather be, really.

TW: What would you say to other mugs who aspire to be coffee mugs and to live with owners in the Pacific Northwest?

CM: Follow your dreams. They’ll be times when you might find yourself in hot water, or think that you might crack under pressure, but you need to stay strong. You never know what the future might bring.

TW: Great advice. So, what are you going to do with the rest of your day? It’s about lunch time, so I assume most of the coffee you’ll hold today has already been finished.

CM: I’m probably going to sit out on Dena’s desk with about an inch of cold coffee in the bottom of me until dinnertime.

TW: That sounds…relaxing.

CM: It’s stale, to be honest. All in a day’s work, though. Can’t complain.

TW: Last question: how do you like to take the coffee you hold?

CM: I don’t take it. I give it.

Editor’s note: None of the mugs pictured are my actual coffee mug, because my actual coffee declined to be photographed.
