In the latest episode of The Write Gear Scott Westerfeld, Nalo Hopkinson, and Justine Larbalestier talked about the chairs they use to write. Finding a good chair to sit in can be just as important as finding the right laptop or keyboard. And sometimes it’s just as or even more expensive.

Scott’s chair, the Flight Recliner retails for $1,600 up to over $2K. And highly adjustable office chairs like Nalo uses usually run just under $1,000, like the ones The Wirecutter like best.

Justine’s writing chair is at the other end of the spectrum in terms of price. She uses a balance ball/yoga ball like this one, which you can usually find for around $20. They make office-chair like things that fit such balls, but they’re not necessary. The purpose is, according to Justine, to ensure she keeps her back muscles engaged at all times.

My questions are these:

  1. What attributes are your Must Haves for a writing chair/seat?
  2. How much would you be willing to spend on a chair/seat you’re going to sit in a bunch during writing sessions?
  3. What do you sit in for writing at the moment? (Feel free to share pictures!)
