The only writing techniques that work are ones that you use.

Don’t make writing harder than it has to be. When it comes to thinking up ideas to write about, use tried-and-true methods that writers have used for centuries. The secret of creativity is that it’s available to everyone.

Below, you’ll find 4 prewriting techniques that are easy to do and will have you filling pages of ideas in minutes. In 15 minutes, you will be able to fill at least 5 sheets of paper and have ideas to write about to last you weeks.

The Rules of Prewriting

Every game has rules. Writing is no exception. Except the rules are easy.

#1 — Don’t stop.
#2 — See #1.

What that means is, when you start prewriting, keep the pen or pencil on the paper and keep moving forward. Don’t stop. Just keep writing.

That means:

  • no going back to cross out (that’s stopping; besides, that’s editing)
  • no stopping to think (that’s…er…. stopping).
  • no stalling and searching…
