Past became present and looked to the future.
the sky was purple like a remembered bruise
all the kings horses fell down and wept
many martyrs rejected their wounds and smiled
tombs blossomed and burst with life
smiles became sincere and baffled everyone
every lonely wall deserved its own door
greyhounds raced to the office to eat lunch
poetry became obvious and meaningless
stars fell on Alabama and Alabama burned
the sunny side of the street slid into gloom
cats despaired and deserted their owners
whirlpools opened and sucked the life from kale
a broken Huck Finn retreated from the territories
wolves howled in the closets of politicians
human kindness overflowed and drowned multitudes
leaves let go of trees and knew freedom
laryngitis afflicted many well meaning Muses
the young ate the old and got dysentery
airplanes awoke and formed up into flocks
bankers handed out Krugerrands to bums
zombies announced the end of the apocalypse
all the butterflies came home to roost
the peace that passeth understanding stayed secret
babies grimaced and refused to be cute
eggs over easy became nervous and diseased
hidden meanings emerged and caused mayhem
memory forgot its car keys and wept
great expectations melted into wedding cakes
many were chosen but few were saved
cassowaries were nevermore mentioned
toxic waste dumps applied perfume and flirted
roads ran away and hid in railway stations
men and women understood each other and grew bored
words changed their meanings with their clothes
change froze into stasis and stood for office
a sense of nonsense everywhere prevailed
the mind lost itself and whistled happily
