“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark.”

we’d be escaping
our own selves, the scars of rejection
all over our space-&-time skins.
we’ll make these scars as big
as doors & exit through them,
carrying our demons with us
& will make them as big as doom,
never at rest again.. never at peace.
would you pick
a handful of Meccan dust
while crossing the seven seas &
blow it at your besiegers, those
who burnt down your houses
& say, “and We placed a barrier
in front of them & a barrier
behind them & We have enshrouded
them so they see not¹.”
would you wish the dust swarm
into their ears & their nostrils
while they sleep & change
their perspectives,
make them see in their dreams.
would you ever forgive them
for dragging you by your hair
out of your own homes.
would you ever again call it home.
- verse 9 of surah Yā-Sīn ; the verse recited by the Prophet (PUH) while escaping the Quraysh.
