We ❤️ emojis.

Sure they are fun and attractive yes, but if you were to take a moment and think about it, emojis actually do a hell of a job helping you throughout daily human interactions as well. and if you were to get on a high horse and say “No Praveen, emojis are just cartoons and they’re nothing but reply material for lazy people being forced to be more active in blatant corporate money making agendas and you’re one of those sheeple who are blinded by that fact”, well you’re about to schizz out some sore beef with me, kind sir. 😤

Did you just say ‘cartoons’? Well did you know that the said ‘cartoons’ have been helping human beings express themselves better and easier, paving way to a constant rapid increase in human evolution throughout the years? Oh and also ‘😂’ was Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year in 2015, I mean how stupid of them to name a ‘cartoon’ the word of the year, huh? and not to mention, the movie which was completely based on those ‘cartoons’ have grossed over a total of $217 million worldwide winning not only one but 4 Golden Raspberrys, or probably that was also because it was just a ‘ cartoon’ as well, I imagine. ‘Or maybe they’re just cartoons and their cause of existence is for the kids and teens to use and enjoy’, said NO ADULT EVER?

Emojis are quite literally the telltale sign of modern human communication, and the greatest metamorphosis in human expression the modern digital world ever created. So NO, emojis are NOT just cartoons and reply material for lazy people, they are cuteness with purpose!

Okay.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that the one thing we always admired about emojis is their ability to ease human interactions. And if we were to combine that admiration with the passion we have for making human interactions easier and better with every single interface we make, it’s fair to say we always are quite literally obsessed with emojis. Because for us, emojis are not just fun cartoons or two dimensional artistic representations of everyday life. They create opportunities for new conversations, they make existing conversations last longer and and they help people of all ages, regardless of their differences to engage within a simple language that represents all of them, and everything they do. AND also they can get you out of awkward conversations with your ex, reaffirm your social existence in those group conversations that you don’t actually give a fuck about, and then there’s of course 🍆 and 🍑.

🤷🏽‍️

Now I know what you’re thinking, why do you love emojis so much to an extent that it almost sounds a tad bit creepy?

Hmm 🤔 well, it’s fair to say we always were quite literally obsessed with emojis from early on. Our obsession with emojis meant so much to us that we had emojis designed from scratch for all the team members and we’d present each and every newcomer with their own designated emoji as well. 😏 and of course, we’d get schwifty using ’em in our Slack conversations day and night too! Not only did it create an engaging atmosphere for all our team conversations, it also made us feel right at home. 🙌

Feast your eyes upon Pav, Pas, Kal and Chat as emojis in all their glory.

and guess what, we had emojis integrated to one of our products as well. Recharger, which is a simple app which scans top up cards, saving users from the hassle of scratching and typing the PIN in order to top up their mobile credit. As of now Recharger has scanned more than 7.2 million top up cards and it has gone viral in social media and it’s quickly becoming the go-to-method of topping up mobile credit in Sri Lanka.

Check out Recharger’s case study at: https://thiken.com/portfolio/recharger

We integrated emojis throughout the experience of the app and boy did it work out like a charm! People thought it was friendly, and it was simplifying the messages we were trying to convey and people fell in 🧡 with it.

Emoji Day? More like Emoji YAY!

And then there’s the World Emoji Day. Since 2015, we’d go crazy on that one majestic day ever to grace the face of this earth. We used to go bonkers with it when we were in Fargo and even though we moved to Austin this year, we did not forget to pay our own homage. ️🙇‍

Make sure to check out this year’s Emoji Day highlights on our Instagram.

Yes we know, we need to get a life. 😭

All that said and done, emoji’s are here to stay. Rest assured, it won’t be replacing the great English language of course, and it won’t any time soon. But in a world where conversations and discussions are vital more than ever before, there’s no arguing that emojis ticks all the right boxes in effective communication, influencing people to engage while expressing more from our honest, emotional selves. They’re not here just for the people who say things like “ye fambam #blessed smh lmao”, they’re here for each and every one of us. 💑

And let us take a moment, get down on our knees and just thank the Japanese for the emoticons and thank God for the emojis. 🙏

In all seriousness though, we should thank the Japanese for emojis as well actually. Shigetaka Kurita, you rock my dude! 👏
