Or: what the hell, Martha Stewart?

My wife and I were watching Martha Stewart Living earlier. The reasons are many and random. For one, it was a channel on our Roku that plays it 24/7, and she’s both interesting enough that we can watch a lot of episodes while also being dull enough to do other things while the show is on without being distracted.

However, an episode (which was apparently part of a series of several) where she hosted baking school students to watch her do her Martha thing triggered a piece of my brain. It asked one simple but nagging question: what the fuck did Martha Stewart do to to get a TV show and become such a ubiquitous personality in the first place?

So, I spent the next 15 minutes scrolling her Wikipedia page, and holy crap it’s a roller coaster.

First off, she was a model when she was a teenager, making $15 an hour for her modeling work. The fact that fast food workers struggle to make that much in many parts of the country is baffling to me, but that’s not the point of this. She also baby-sat the kids of Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, among other Yankees players at the time, which is fascinating but also not the point of this.
