What is the best macro-view of a life?

One way of looking at your life is to periodically go through your calendar and take note of where your time is spent.

Another is to go through three months of sent emails in a single 10 or 15 minute span.

Condensing the view like that might surprise you.

Are these outputs of your time in proportion to the way you’d spend your version of an excellent life?

Buster Benson is one of the people I most admire when it comes to thinking and writing about behaviour change. See: Live Like A Hydra, The Death Bed Game, and 1 Metric Kiloslog.

On his personal website, Buster keeps a macro-view of his life, by tracking all the events that effect his Life Change Score. Buster’s life change score measures the following:

Death of a close family member or friend
Major personal injury or illness
Major personal injury or illness of family member
Got divorced or broke up with long-term partner
Got married
New child
New sibling
Child left home
Started a new serious relationship
Imprisoned
Retired
Lost job
Financial state changed
Took out a major mortgage
Foreclosed on a mortgage or loan
Got a new job
Began or finished school
Moved to a new place
Changed schools
Took a long vacation
Multiple disappointments around big personal goal
Completed a big personal goal

I love this macro-view of life as it gives profound perspective.

I want to create my own document, but to track something slightly different— The Excellent Life Score.

I have a good idea of what constitutes an excellent life for me, and I think tracking events that impact your excellent life could have a positive reinforcing effect. For example:

Had date night with Jules.
Called my Mum.
Exercised for more than 45 minutes or competed in an athletic event.
Completed a meaningful piece of work at my job.
Published a piece of writing.
Finished a book.
Had a dinner party.
Went on a roadtrip.
Had coffee with a friend (existing or new) I found inspiring.
Increased my net wealth by $5,000.
Got a haircut.
Spent time mentoring someone or with a mentor.
Did something joyful — created a playlist, made a home-cooked meal from a recipe, watched an NBA or NRL game, finished a great #longread.

That’s not an exhaustive list. And it’s problematic that each event gets equal weight. But it’s a start, and if you tracked just those things, you could look back on a quarter clearly to see how excellent it had really been.
