97 people signed up to join the Flux Cells network. They answered the call to co-create a network of people across the world who want to change the way work works. I’ve met with 43 of them already, either in-person on online (if we’ve not chatted yet, grab a time here that works for you).

It’s been super inspiring. And now it’s time to start experimenting.

Our vision is to create a global decentralised consultancy and learning network. A company and a brand that enables independent consultants to do more and better work, and that supports people inside organisations to make change.

We call the people Partners, and the locations or projects Cells.

We’ve been busy

Since announcing Cells 8 weeks ago, here’s what we’ve done so far ✅, what is underway 🚧 and what we’d like to do in the future 🔮

  • ✅ Publish original academic research by a Partner on our Medium publication
  • ✅ Get Partners to run a paid Flux client project, with support from us remotely (85% of the fee goes directly to delivery costs & expenses)
  • ✅ Design and co-deliver a paid Flux client project with Partners from another country (85% of the fee to delivery & expenses)
  • ✅ Get Partners all over the world to support a Flux project delivery, and split the revenue so they get paid for their involvement through micro-tasks (experiment where 5% of the total fee is split between them)
  • 🚧 Write a Starter Kit to support some of the more experienced and enthusiastic Partners to start selling Flux Services to potential clients
  • 🚧 Get Partners from Amsterdam to help facilitate a 200-person workshop to crowdsource a new vision for Dutch Democracy (Flux speaker fee is split between facilitators — event on the 16th Dec here)
  • 🚧 Support Partners in the UK, Europe, and the USA to develop their own projects, and build future collaboration with Flux and other Partners into those projects
  • 🔮 Run test projects in three new locations (Brazil, Spain, USA) to bring together Cells Partners and kickstart some more activity
  • 🔮 Get a new client in a new location by working with one or more Partners
  • 🔮 Test a platform that will enable Partners to support and learn from each other, in a format that isn’t just another Slack team
  • 🔮 Prototype a tech product that can help organisations learn better from their mistakes, and prototype it with Cells
  • 🔮 Write a new book on an as-yet-undecided topic, wth multiple Partners co-authoring
  • 🔮 Test an equity model which encourages self-management and entrepreneurship. The idea is that after delivery costs (e.g. Cell Partner day fees) the remaining margin is split 65% between local Cell Partners (to incentivise local team work), 25% between global Network Partners (to incentivise global team work), 10% to Founding Partners (Jon & Jim)
The 17 Partners who supported the delivery of last week’s client project. They’ll all receive a proportion of 5% of the total fee.

What we’d like your help with 🙏

  • 🙏 Suggestions on a product/platform to support collaboration and learning
  • 🙏 More places / clients to kickstart experiments immediately
  • 🙏 Partners who are serious about consulting under the Flux brand and want to get out there and pitch to potential clients using our Starter Kit

Also…

We’ve written a book about the future of democracy: Democracy Squared. We interviewed 5 projects from across the globe who are using technology to make our democracies more democratic. It’s a book full of hope for a better future, and it’s got loads of stuff about org redesign in it too. Check it out here 👇
