The maths behind freedom: why we had to set up a network from the off

Today, whilst we were advising our founding client, Rinse FM, the internet confirmed our hunch and asked us to launch phase 3 on day 2 of our newly founded business.

Changemakers from France, US, Canada, UK and Spain answered our call, so we’ve decided to listen and open flux up to the globe straight away and empower changemakers from around the world to setup their own flux cells and join the network. Here are the numbers behind the madness.

What’s your answer?

When I ask this in keynote talks, the most common answer tends to be 8. Sometimes 6. Rarely 16. This is a common trick of the mind which blinds us to the effects of accelerating complexity.

Are you a X or a +

It’s a fun test to see how you see the world. What did you answer? This is my rough interpretation of this based on the answer:

$6m (ie. 2+2+2)= Linear view of the world
$8m (ie. 2x4) = Mildly exponential view of the world
$16m (ie. 4x4) = Highly exponential view of the world

I initially answered 16 and thought, ‘great, I think exponentially’, only to realise that there was another option: 4⁴ = $256m. i.e. a Radically exponential view of the world.

This trick of the mind is what Ray Kurzweil calls ‘the intuitive linear view’ vs ‘the historical exponential view’ and something that puts numbers behind the reason we need to build businesses on networks. In fact, the way we’re seeing it, is that if we want to change the world, there’s no other choice. It’s mathematically impossible to hit the hockey stick curve from a centralised system.

What I’m saying is that flux might have a cute impact on the world if it’s just Jim & I. At best, it might have an awesome impact on a select group of people. But if we genuinely want to help our humanity thrive by liberating organisations for human and commercial benefit we need to go 2, 4, 256. Otherwise, it’ll take more than a lifetime to have the impact we want to have.

So today, we’re opening up and introducing flux cells and the flux network. This is what’s in it for fluxers around the world:

  • Be your own boss
  • Get leads for meaningful change projects
  • Have real skin in the game (we’re talking %)
  • Share learnings & experiences with a global network
  • Work with like-minded people
  • Be supported by other talented people
  • Make your dent in the universe

We have more hunches to stress test in terms of the details (although we’re pretty confident they make broad sense), so we want to build this network model together. A model that will enable us to pull together to finally change the way work works. When we unite all of the passionate, experienced and knowledgeable change agents and experts in organisational redesign, we will have a huge impact on the world. Finally putting the old system to bed and awakening a new generation of enlightened organisations that serve humanity and energise our greatest potential.
