Motorola Razr (2020)

The Pitch

Announced in late 2019 and launched the following year, the new Motorola Razr tries to leverage nostalgia for one of the world’s original flip-phone icons and sacrifices specs in pursuit of this novel form-factor.

The Specs

Resolution: 876 x 2142

RAM: 6GB

ROM: 128GB

Expandable Storage: No

Headphone Jack: No

Fingerprint Scanner: Yes

Operating System: Android 9.0

Battery Size: 2510mAh

Rear Camera: 16-megapixel (f/1.7) primary sensor+ Time-of-Focus lens

Front-Facing Camera: 5-megapixel (f/2.0) sensor

Note — The original Motorola Razr launched without 5G connectivity. A 5G-enabled follow-up with a number of design improvements launched several months after the fact.

The Reviews

The Verge’s Deiter Bohn wasn’t particularly thrilled with the Motorola Razr:

If this phone didn’t fold, I wouldn’t recommend it at one-sixth of its current price.

TechRadar’s David Lumb offered up damning praise for the revamped Motorola Razr:

While it does offer a foldable form factor that minimizes its footprint and allows it to fit in smaller pockets, and pulls off some awesome selfies, the phone cuts corners to achieve its diminutive size, with less power, onboard storage, and battery capacity.

Our Verdict?

While time has been generous to the Motorola Razr’s lofty launch pricing, many of the compromises — mentioned above — that marred the device at launch remain unresolved.

The battery life remains short, the durability fraught and the processor and camera are underwhelming. The Motorola Razr was one of the first foldables on the scene but it pays a heavy price for it.
