Samsung Z Flip 3

As the name suggests, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is intended to pick up where earlier models left off, with new features, an improved design and better specs.

So, what’s changed and what hasn’t? What’s the difference between the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5G?

Design

The most obvious difference between the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the design. Samsung have basically gone back to the drawing board on the look and feel of the original device.

While the new Z Flip 3 does utilise the same clamshell-style form-factor, it’s got a new two-tone aesthetic that’s reminded many of Google’s second generation Pixel phones.

As part of this design, the Z Flip 3 now features a significantly larger and more useful cover display. The cover display on the original Z Flip and Z Flip 5G was just 1.1-inches, the new one is 1.9-inches.

The Z Flip 3 also promises significant durability improvements over earlier efforts. It’s IPX8 rated against water damage, made of a sturdier “Armor Aluminum” material and coated in Gorilla Glass Victus for extra protection.

The Z Flip 3 also features Dolby Stereo speakers where the Z Fold 5G didn’t.

Specs

Spec-wise, the new Z Flip 3 is something of a half step up on the spec sheet of the previous Z Flip 5G.

Both devices share a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED FHD+ main display, up to 256 GB of storage, a 3300mAh battery, 8 GB of RAM and a (12-megapixel + 12-megapixel) dual-lens rear camera matched by a 10-megapixel selfie-camera. They even weight the same.

That being said, the main display on the Z Flip 3 features a high-refresh rate of 120Hz — which serves to separate the two screens in a way that resolution and size doesn’t.

As such, the only major improvement here is the CPU. This year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor is an obvious improvement on the Snapdragon 855+ and Snapdragon 865+ found in the Z Flip and Z Flip 5G.

Colours

The original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip was available in three colours: Mystic Black, Mystic Purple and Mystic Gold.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G was available in two new colours: Mystic Bronze and Mystic Grey.

The new Galaxy Z Flip 3 is available in a total of seven colours globally. Four of which are available to Australian buyers: Cream, Phantom Black, Green and Lavender.
