Double Down On Your Language Skills

#6 Go To A French Conversation Meetup

The impact of language amazes me everyday. How you can create feelings, thoughts, ideas, products and services with your words.

What if you could understand people from all corners of the world? Be available to start a conversation with anyone? I wish I could speak every language in the world.

Today I wanted to get closer to my wish. I went to practice a language with 220 million speakers. French.

The Experience

I know the french grammar within and out, because I read french in school. On the other side, I can’t speak it. My experience says i’m not alone.

I’ve made some research, and the best way to learn a new language is to just speak it. Like a child.

I signed up for an event on my favorite application meetup, and went to the train. On my way there I tried to practice some sentences and listen to french music, in hope of any miracle.

When I got there I was meet by only one attender, which meant I would spend one hour speaking french. Oh my god, this was going to be a challenge.

In the beginning I listened more, and with time I began to speak. Soon enough the conversation got a flow. It happened when I let go of my fear of saying something wrong. What a great experience!

How You Can Apply What I Learnt

  1. Choose a language to learn, and have a specific vision for why you want to learn it.
  2. Try to memorize 10–20 sentences, and then attend to a conversation meetup. You will get stunned of how much you will comprehend.
  3. Think of how a child learns a language, and adopt the same tactics. Children are smart.

To learn languages is to learn more about life. You will experience new parts of life you did not knew exist. New doors will open for you.

What thrilling action are you going to make today?
