“There are three responses to a piece of design - yes, no and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for.” - Milton Glaser

Did you know great designers apply empathy into the products they design? Same here, i never knew that but design 101 has been uncovering the little things that make great designers to me. Approaches I have taken to gain empathy are;

  • Abandoning the little ego I have.
  • Adopting humility.
  • Showing people around me that I care.
  • Honing my observation skills.
  • Being curious always by asking why, how and what when confused
  • Being a better listener
  • And being sincere

Empathy is what makes great designers, so i guess i am on my way to being a great designer 😊.

“Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care” - Theodore Roosevelt

Always thought i had an eye for everything concerning design until i got to know about “perceptual set” and failed a little test. Perceptual set explains the ability for one to unconsciously/consciously ignore certain data because we have already notice certain information. Perceptual set works in two ways;

  1. The perceiver has certain expectations and focuses attention on certain aspects of the sensory data.
  2. The perceiver knows how to classify, understand and name selected data and what inferences to draw from it.

Depending on how you read the diagram above, you will read the characters in the middle as “13” or “B”. Perceptual set explains this concept.

I love good designs and i have always wanted to be able to create great designs at the same time. These has led to a state of fear most time but joining design 101 and getting information that make great designers makes me excited. I am getting to know about the basic concept of design and its all fun now.

Practice

Yes, i have been practicing with the little knowledge i have, cause as we know, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

It really has been a great first week. From learning about design thinking to listening to a podcast by “The Futur” to taking an exercise and quiz, I can totally say, design 101 is the total package for a design training. Senpai has been great all through, showing high levels of empathy great designer emit. Thank you for Senpai for the wonderful opportunity you have made available. From here on out, its one step at a time.
