Design. It has been a part of my life for the past decade, in my early years, it was a passive activity that I enjoyed. In the last half decade, I got more serious and got exposed to more tools like Photoshop and Illustrator. Armed with these tools I delved into the world of graphic design fully. Starting out with creating flyer designs and then moving on to stencils and logos it was fun to see things come alive.

Amidst the feeling of ecstasy derived from seeing my designs on print, there was still a lingering feeling of dissatisfaction, this feeling lingered on even when I began UI/UX design. The designs would look good but something always felt off. So what was the problem? I lacked fundamentals.

Recently, I realized that to grow in any given field you must first master the fundamentals. I began doing some reading on my own and to my surprise, my work improved considerably and I came to see design beyond being a culture. Design is value, value that aids people in their daily lives, especially when empathy is applied.

A few weeks ago, I ran into the Ad online by teach.senpai, and I was intrigued. The Design 101 course has helped lay solid foundations for me. The extensive videos and writes ups sent to my mail each week have been beyond a blessing, every blog post and tutorial is now in my pocket app by the way.

I have been able to learn the foundations of design and this has given me the drive to refactor my old designs and try out new techniques. In no particular order the most impactful topics for me where:
— Visual Weights
— Gestalt’s Principles
— Grids
— Typography
— Colour Theory
— Layout and Composition
— Wireframes

Now I am hungry.

Some of these topics were new to me (Gestalt especially), reading through every article was breathtaking, new things got revealed to me. I am really glad it was able to take this class. I am quite sure I would take a weekend off to read through every article again.

Thank you, Henry and team, .senpai. It has been really amazing learning from you guys.
P.s I applied most of the things I learnt from each week to create this.

So what do you think, Senpai?

Arigato.
