Is It Wrong to Have a Baby in Today’s World?

Why young people (and old), need hope.

I’m glad to be too old to decide whether or not I should have a child. Of course, there are the usual concerns of health, stability, money, and time, but now there are questions of global collapse for prospective parents to consider.

After all, even young Greta Thunberg, at the 2019 World Economic Forum, said,

“I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day, and then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house was on fire. Because it is.”

If I was young, how could I have hope for another generation?

Yes, it’s challenging older people, and my heart cries for my grandchildren, all children, and all of nature. But I don’t have to make the wrenching decision not to have a baby.

I’ve discussed it with my grown children, and they’ve told me, “We aren’t planning to have as many children as you did, but if nobody has kids, who are going to be the problem-solvers of the future?”

Nature persists in living and trying to procreate as long as possible.
