At Bessemer Venture Partners we are always looking for new ways to help our companies work better, smarter and faster. Sometimes these solutions are revolutionary. Sometimes they are simply more efficient.

Recently one of our portfolio companies showed us a better way to track employee equity data. Equity data is particularly cumbersome to present and read — even for smaller companies with only a few employees. We were excited to see a better way of doing this, that improves on the tables and charts often used. With their permission, using anonymized data, we wanted to share their template.

The tables below provide all the standard data including share category, number of shares, start and end-date, etc. What is different is a colored bar across the month and year columns that provides a snapshot of where each employee is in their vesting schedule, while also showing a broader picture of total employee cohort vesting. This information helps the board understand how much bandwidth a company has in their equity arsenal and provides a window into critical points in the company life cycle where equity movement could become a strategic concern.

We think this is an elegant solution for visualizing complex employee equity data. You can access the tables below in a google doc Equity Tracker template here, which you can download and use for your organization.

We hope you find this tip useful.

Cheers!
