A resting place

A restinga is a distinct sort of land form. It is classified as a “spit” or a “sandspit” which is a deposition of sediment that protrudes from coastal areas. They are found in eastern Brazil and they are covered in moist tropical and subtropical broadleaf forest. More simply put, they are covered in jungle. The sandy substrate is usually very acidic and nutrient poor, but well adapted shrubs and medium sized trees do just fine there.

The Restinga da Marambaia is just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. It is about 42 kilometers long, an exceptional length, and separates Sepetiba Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. It is owned and run by the Brazilian military, of all organizations, and is used as a leisure space for military staff and their friends and families. Scientific research is also done within the pristine Atlantic forest.

What a life it would be for your default vacation spot to be untouched oceanic jungle.

Perhaps it’s time to join the force.
