Using MetaMask to improve your wallet security
MyEtherWallet is great, but trying to access your funds directly in this way could leave you vulnerable to hackers. If you are tricked into accessing a fraudulent website pretending to be MEW all your funds can be stolen if you enter your private key.
Thats’s where MetaMask comes in. MetaMask links your web browser with the Ethereum network, and means you don’t have to enter your private key if you wish to access your funds!
Setting Up MetaMask
- Find the MetaMask extension in the Chrome Store. Make sure it’s the real version with many downloads.
2) Install it by clicking “Add to Chrome”. You can also install MetaMask on Firefox, Brave and Safari browers.
3) Click the new orange MetaMask logo in your extension bar.
5) Read and accept the terms of service.
6) Create a password to encrypt your private key. Make sure it’s long and strong, and store it using an encrypted password manager or write it down clearly on two pieces of paper.
7) Save your 12 word phrase. This is a private key you need to access your funds. No one can recover it if you lose it, so make sure you make multiple copies and store it safely!
8) Now that you have a MetaMask wallet you can head over to MyEtherWallet. Again, make sure you type the URL exactly: https://www.myetherwallet.com/
9) When you try to access your walletor send funds, select the box to use MetaMask. You are now able to access your Ethereum and ThinkCoin without entering your private key online!
