Although DC is known for it’s prominent role in government, there is now a new huge demand for programmers that has yet to be met! So, if you are in the DC area, now is an excellent time to take the first steps to learn a new skills set, whether it’s frontend development, backend development, or data science. Below are some of the most popular coding meetups to help you learn to code in the DC area.

  • Code for DC is the DC chapter of Code for America Brigade — a national network of “civic hackers” who contribute their skills toward using the web as a platform for local government and community service. If you want to hack for a better America, this is your meetup!
  • DC Python is a meetup centered around the backend programming language Python. Hosted events include day long courses, workshops, and project nights. Their workshops are focused on beginners, but intermediate programmers will enjoy some of their workshops as well.
  • Thinkful DC has the advantage of hosting meetups in several locations: downtown D.C.,the Dulles Tech Corridor, and Crystal City. Their workshops are geared towards all types of developers — those just starting out, intermediate coders, and seasoned developers looking to get career advice. Their hands-on workshops focus on topics like JavaScript and HTML/CSS while their tech talks cover important topics like building extensive portfolios and choosing your first programming language.
  • Women Who Code DC is one of the largest global communities of women engineers in the world. If you identify as a women, this is an amazing group of people to start your coding journey with. The DC chapter of this organization runs hack nights, workshops and more — all geared towards helping women learn to code!
  • Learn Ruby in DC! Has monthly hackathons where you are encouraged to bring your laptop and any of your current projects! This open and friendly community cares about being inclusive and specifically lists their own code of conduct.
