Tools I’m Using to Improve Writing

Writing is hard. I’m trying really hard to improve my writing skills. When you want to become better at doing something, you have to do that something more. For me, I want to become better at writing, hence, I have to write more. In addition to increasing the frequency of writing, I’ve used a couple of other tools to help me become a better writer.
One tool I have used for the past three months is the website www.750words.com. The idea is simple — write more than 750 words, distraction free, every day if possible. The website has a nice badge system (gamification of learning) to keep you motivated. Although the site discourages you from editing your material, building the habit of daily writing should improve your craft. So far I have written more than 67 thousand words — enough for a 200+ pages book.
I’ve also started reading books about writing. Last month I read Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. I enjoyed the book. I also enjoyed learning that ALL writers, no matter the skill level, struggle to write. This summer I also want to read Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg. To become better, we have to learn from the experts. That is why I read.
Finally, I have been using Grammarly to catch mistakes as I write. I use the free version, but you have the option to pay to access other features. There are some good reviews online if you want to learn more about Grammarly.
Learning in focus — Be intentional about improving a skill. Approach the challenge with a growth-mindset.
