It all makes sense once you accept the true horror of it
The Fellowship was able to bring the One Ring to Mount Doom only because Sauron never imagined that anyone who possessed the Ring could so much as think of destroying it, much less make the attempt.
A triumvirate of brutal self-interests in the real world is currently reversing that play against the United States.
The Constitution of the USA does not contemplate the possibility of a single party being elected to control of all branches of federal government, with the purpose of destroying what they had ostensibly sought to govern. And so, it does not provide protection against the strategy.
This is where the interests of the Kremlin, the Trump family, and the new American Oligarchs (the ones standing between Trump and everyone else at his second inauguration) tragically align. The USA, as a political and economic and cultural structure, an uncasted representative democracy, isn’t working for them.
The oligarchs have retconned it a bit more to their liking — notice how people just accept now that parcel drivers should be running to and from their trucks? — but the whole process is proving too slow and expensive.
