If you’ve ever discussed abortion with anti-abortion Christians, you’ve probably been struck by how unmoved they are by outcomes.

After all, we know a good bit about what reduces abortion, and passing laws against it ain’t on the list. Instead, here’s what we find:

Add to that, banning abortion dramatically raises the maternal death rate. In other words, it kills women.

So if we know that abortion bans don’t reduce rates of abortion, and that they raise rates of women dying while pregnant or in childbirth, and that we actually can reduce abortion by creating a strong social safety net and providing fact-based sex ed, free contraception, and public family planning, why don’t anti-abortion Christians care? Why do they continue to insist on abortion bans while simultaneously opposing the programs proven to achieve what they claim they want to achieve?

It’s simple: They don’t care about the outcomes and never did. They care about their own purity.
