This Anti-Immigrant TV Ad Is Hitting The Airwaves This Week, Courtesy Of Donald Trump
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump’s first television ad relies on the same anti-immigrant sentiment that has characterized his positions on the campaign trail. In the ad, Trump promises to “make America great again” by banning Muslim immigration and building a southern U.S. border wall that he assures that Mexico will pay for.
“He’s calling for a temporary shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until we can figure out what’s going on,” a narrator states in the television spot. “He’ll quickly cut the head off ISIS and take their oil. And he’ll stop illegal immigration by building a wall on the southern border that Mexico will pay for.”
As the narrator speaks, images of the shooters in the San Bernardino, California terror attack flash in the background, followed by images of what appear to be masked terrorists standing in front of Arabic lettering and an aerial shot of people running across what could be the U.S.-Mexico border. The ad closes with Trump shouting at one of his rallies, “We will make America great again.”
The ad, expected to hit the airwaves this week, will air in Iowa and New Hampshire ahead of the Iowa caucuses next month as the presidential primary season heats up.
Up until now, Trump’s extreme views on immigration have garnered him plenty of free media attention. He launched his campaign on claims that Mexican immigrants could potentially be drug dealers, rapists, and criminals. And after the terror attacks in Paris, France and San Bernardino, Trump pivoted to Muslims, calling for a total ban on Muslim immigration to the country and appeared to support an idea to register Muslims in a federal database. Since Trump has maintained his Islamophobic political rhetoric, there’s been a sharp uptick in the number of anti-Islam incidents throughout the United States, with Muslims around the country falling victim to assault, harassment, and attacks on their houses of worship.
As Trump told the Washington Post — which was given an exclusive first look at the ad — he hopes the spot will help undecided voters understand that the United States has become “a dumping ground” for immigrants.
The migrants shown crossing the border fence in the video does not take place on the southern U.S. border. Instead, these are “Moroccans crossing the border into Melilla, one of two enclaves on the Moroccan coast that are held by Spain. Migrants who cross the border there are essentially entering territory held by a European Union nation, even though they are still on the African continent,” according to Politifact.
According to a NBC correspondent, Trump’s campaign manager’s responded, “No shit its not the Mexican border but thats what our country is going to look like if we don’t do anything.”
