Who needs civil rights?

Tonight, the president will make his first address to Congress, but he won’t be the only one to make a statement — some of those most hurt by his policies will be there too. One agenda he’ll be pushing is his new budget, which calls for cuts to almost everything the government does. Some government workers might not care too much, though; 229 Republicans just voted to keep Trump’s tax returns a secret, indicating a general lack of interest in doing their job.

Jeff Sessions spent his morning extolling the virtues of black history. His Department of Justice is busy rolling back civil rights protections for minorities, namely people of color and transgender people. (Then there’s the Department of Education, which is also having trouble understanding a few basic things about civil rights.) Sessions’ rollbacks have notably come in a year when at least six transgender women (the majority of them women of color) have been murdered.
