Most Sunday evenings when I was a child, we’d drive fifteen miles to visit my father’s mother who lived in the tony Mountain Brook section of Birmingham. Mountain Brook was actually a town apart from Birmingham, but that’s not so important here because this story isn’t about tax bases or segregated schools.
