Getting a job in information technology (IT) as an international student while still studying can be a quite challenging. Unavailability to work full-time and lack of skills required can act as a major setback. However, these factors should not prevent you from getting a job in IT.

Here are some general tips for international students looking to get an IT job in Australia while still studying:

  1. Build your skills: Make sure you are proficient in the technologies and programming languages that are in demand in the Australian job market. Consider taking online courses or earning relevant certifications to enhance your skills.
  2. Network with professionals in the industry: Attend industry events and networking sessions to make connections and learn about job opportunities. You can also reach out to IT professionals on LinkedIn and ask for advice or introductions to potential employers.
  3. Apply for internships or part-time jobs: Look for internships or part-time jobs that can provide you with valuable experience and help you build your professional network. These roles may also lead to full-time employment after you graduate.
  4. Tailor your resume and cover letter: When applying for IT jobs, it is important to tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific role you are applying for. Emphasize your relevant skills and experience, and be sure to highlight any projects or achievements that demonstrate your capabilities.
  5. Research potential employers: Look for companies that are hiring IT professionals and are willing to sponsor international students for work visas. You may also want to consider companies that have a history of hiring international students or have a diverse workforce.
  6. Consider a graduate program: Many companies in Australia offer graduate programs specifically for international students. These programs can provide you with on-the-job training and help you build your professional network, which can lead to full-time employment after you graduate.
  7. Keep trying: Even after you’ve tried all the above steps and are still unable to find a job, you need to keep trying. Lots of international students are unable to find a professional job because they have applied to a couple of companies and didn’t get a response. I strongly urge you to keep trying until you find a job in your respective field.

It is important to note that international students in Australia are typically limited to working a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight while they are studying. However, there may be opportunities to work additional hours during school breaks. Governments can also lift work limitations based upon the economical requirements of the country such as during the COVID-19 pandemic period.
