You can sell your car personally or to a dealerships. Dealerships will provide info about how to sell your car if you enquire there. In this post, I’ll explain how to sell a car personally in Australia.

Provide advertisement or sell to a friend

You might want to ask your friends or people known if they’re interested in buying your car. You can send message in a group in a social media or an email.

However, if you want to sell online, then you can provide advertisement if you want to sell your car. The one I’ve used is Facebook marketplace. You can also use Gumtree. Carsales.com.au is better, but you’ll need to pay for your advertisement. Always be aware not to provide personal information on these platforms.

Meet people somewhere safe where other people are present like parks, mall and meet during day. It’s better if you take someone with you for your safety and assurance purposes.

In my personal experience, I add the car advertisement online and share them with friends or known people as well so that if they’re interested, then they’ll contact me.

Get buyer’s details:

  1. DOB
  2. Driver License no or Photo ID or Customer no in NSW (better take pic)
  3. Full Name
  4. Address
  5. Phone number
  6. Agreed amount for vehicle

Provide your details:

  1. DOB
  2. Driver License no or Photo ID or Customer no in NSW
  3. Full Name
  4. Address

What to do next?

Next, you’ll need to inform that you’ve sold your vehicle to the authorities. In NSW, you’ll need to go to Service NSW and provide that information. It’ll generally take not more than 5 mins.

  1. Submit notice of disposal for vehicle: (https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/submit-notice-disposal-vehicle)
  2. Remove E-toll tag from ur account — Otherwise you’ll still be charged for the toll used by that vehicle (https://www.myetoll.transport.nsw.gov.au/)
  3. Unlink the car insurance — Otherwise you’ll still be charged for the insurance amount
  4. Check if the vehicle has been removed from your Service NSW account (for NSW) and similar accounts for other states.
