I Had Surgery: The “Pain” Is In The Medical Bills
We pay more for healthcare than any other country on earth, and shouldn’t we be asking why?
As the nurse went over the discharge paperwork with me in my hospital room, she noted the list of prescriptions they had sent to my pharmacy. It included the opioid painkiller oxycodone. Dismissively crinkling my nose, I said, “No thanks.” She looked at me quizzically, mildly surprised. Then she shrugged and noted I didn’t need to pick that up if I didn’t want to… if, that is, I was sure I didn’t want it.
I didn’t need it, and I didn’t want it, so I didn’t get the prescription. However, wouldn’t it be nice if there were a “prescription” to deal with the outrageously high medical bills in America and our asinine system of pricing and billing?
As it turns out, the “prescription” does exist if our American government would fill it. It is right there in Europe. All we would have to do is copy them. We need to adopt the same universal government-paid healthcare found across Europe.
