The Gulf of… What?
If you wanted any more proof that we now have a dictator running our country, here it is
Open a browser and go to Google Maps. Type “Gulf of Mexico” into the Search bar and press Enter. Watch as, voila!, the “Gulf of Mexico” is immediately changed to Donald Trump’s “Gulf of America.”
How did Donald Trump make this happen? And what does it mean?
If you or I wanted to change the name of a city, mountain, island, desert, country, or some pile of rocks big enough to have a name on a map , we’d have to follow a process set by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN):
- On the proper form, submit a “compelling reason” for the change. Note that the most compelling reason is that the new name is in use currently. Also note that if the requested new name is that of a person, the person must have been dead for at least five years and must have made important civic contributions to the geographical feature you want to rename.
- Wait a minimum of six months while the BGN asks all interested parties for comments and then makes a decision.
