I am a documentary lover. While I do other things at home, like make materials for tutoring, cook, clean, play video games, etc. My t.v. is often on with something that I can learn from. The t.v. hardly receives my full attention, but I can’t deal with silence while I work. Here’s some of the documentaries I like to watch, and what I’ve learned.

  • Prison – learning about what people’s lives are life in prison will give you so much empathy. Sure they’re fugitives, but they often have lived with a life of trouble. It’s eye-opening to hear their stories. In a weird way it inspires me more to help kids that I know, and help them through their problems before they get too big. It will help you too!
  • Escorts/Prostitutes – I think this lifestyle intrigues me for many reasons. I don’t know any escorts or prostitutes, and I like to learn about their lives. Some of these women do it as a choice, and they otherwise seem completely normal, which wasn’t what I had expected. It’s very interesting.
  • Aliens – I love a good alien story. It’s very cool to hear people’s stories and to wonder whether they are true or not. I am an alien believer, and I like to do my research. Chances are, you won’t be abducted, but if you are, you’ll know what to expect!
  • Ghosts – I have had some ghostly experiences. I love to scare the crap out of myself by hearing other people’s stories. I often regret this when I do it alone, at night though. Who knows, maybe you’ll be a ghost one day, this will give you ideas of how to scare people when the time comes.
  • Religions – As an agnostic, people who believe in other things intrigue me. I love to hear how they got into the religion, and different things they do because of their religion. The more I understand, the more I wonder. It will bring greater thoughts to you, what if everyone was very religious, or what if there were no religions at all?
  • Psychological Problems – I especially feel I learn a lot from these, because they apply to me from time to time. Everyone could use a little greater understanding right? Think of how many people would be helped if everyone knew about psychological problems, signs to watch for, and ways to help people through it.
  • Habits and Obsessions – These are intriguing. People who don’t understand, don’t help. Hoarders is a great one, it lets the family and hoarder tell their story, and explain why they do what they do. Everyone has a reason for doing things, greater understanding can provide so much support, and inspire you to watch your own habits more closely.
  • Lifestyles – I recently watched a documentary on Swingers. That was really interesting! Recently I learned about tribes in the Amazon. I have also watched some about men who own real life sex dolls, people who are super cheap, and lots of other interesting stuff. It’s great for a new perspective.
  • Science – This pretty much sums up all documentaries. There’s always something to learn whether it’s how the human body works, what’s in outer space, machines, life in the arctic, forensics, factories, ancient Egypt, whatever you want, you will always be gaining new understanding.

In conclusion, learning creates new perspectives. Putting a face to all of these things, brings empathy and new understandings. Challenge yourself to view things from other perspectives, and help make this world a better place.
