The Greatest Opportunity for Evangelization In History
Social Media and the Internet pose the greatest opportunity for evangelization in the world right now. Will the church act on it?
Attention 👀
Any faith or church out there in the world would like to capture people’s attention and make those people place all their attention on building a relationship with God, getting to know Him better, and worship Him. I think that that is fare to say.
Since any believer of faith probably views their faith as an amazing and incredible gift that was shared with them, then they want to share that same faith they have received.
We must evangelize our faith to the world.
Time, time, time ⏰
I think we all can agree that Social Media and really the internet has captured the majority of our waking-attention.
“U.S. consumers now spend 5 hours per day on mobile devices,” Tech Church reported March 3rd, 2017.
Those numbers have increased since then, and have been on a steady increase over the past few years of this study. That same article from Tech Crunch sites another study from Flurry Analytics that shows that 92% of time spent on a mobile device is on the apps of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, Messaging/other social platforms, music, media & entertainment. The biggest chunk of that percentage is mainly from all those social media applications. From those stats, it is clear that social media, the internet, and our phones take up a ton of our time, everywhere we go — after all, you’re probably reading this on you’re phone and you probably found this article via a social media post.
Want to know what grinds my gears?
That is really the craziest thing that I hear from people. I hope and pray that we in the church can not view this daunting reality we are all living in during the digital age as a moment when evangelization is not possible.
I hope and pray that we in the church can see this time we are living in of the digital age as the greatest opportunity in history to proclaim the Gospel message and spread faith to the world!
This time is so exciting for precisely that reason!
I’m Starting The Social Church Project!
It is this exciting opportunity to evangelize and promote evangelization in the church that is getting me fired up to start The Social Church Project.
I want churches and the church faithful everywhere to be motivated and equipped to effectively evangelize now, wherever they are in their lives.
I want everyone to know the best ways to pull out their phone and make the best Snapchat, Instagram post, Tweet, Facebook post, YouTube video, podcast or whatever their passionate about sharing — and I want to encourage everyone to do this for the greater glory of God and His Church.
It might sound crazy, but I truly believe that we can really change the world and spread the Gospel with all them crazy face filters on Snapchat that make you appear to throw up rainbows or have a funny dog face. I really believe that it’s possible.
The Social Church Project is for Everyone
Let me be clear, I do not only believe that the topic of this blog that I am writing only has value for youth ministry and youth evangelization.
I believe that the topic of this post addresses a great part of the future of spreading the Gospel message to ALL GENERATIONS.
How do I know this?
Well, this morning my grandmother, who is 74, sent me a poop emoji from her iPhone 8 Plus. My mother and I have a snap streak on Snapchat and she is posting to Facebook and Instagram constantly sharing her life. I see young children spending time playing on iPads instead of with blocks and legos like I did when I was their age. And a young adult couple I know just created a social media account on every platform so that their child would have a social media following by the time they grew old enough and were using the social platforms themselves.
No matter if you like it or not, social media is a part of our lives in this world now, and it has indeed captured a lot of peoples time and attention, and will most likely be there in the future and increase in usage.
As Christians, we are called to be in the world but not of the world (John 17:14–15).
We as a church must answer that call and know that we are first people of the Kingdom of God, citizens destined for Heaven, that means we must be a people of prayer and have a relationship with the Lord.
Second, we must answer the call to live and face the reality of the world that we are in now.
The Social Church Project is about the challenge the church faces now to answer both of those calls to be in the world but not of the world.
It is also about how the church can take action now, in a powerful way, towards the mission given to us all from Christ himself when He told us, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them all that I have taught you. And behold, I will be with you always in the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
The Social Church Project is not only for the church clergy, or those who work in ministry, it is for you — the Church, the Body of Christ present and alive today. Any person who knows Jesus Christ, desires and is growing a personal relationship with Him, and wants to share our beloved savior with the world.
If you agree with me that churches must start to use social media and the internet more effectively to evangelize and spread the Gospel, please give this article a clap 👏 or leave a comment below and share your thoughts.
I’d love to hear from you and listen to what you think about all this. Shoot me a tweet on Twitter or send me a Snap on Snapchat!
Can’t wait to hear from you!
