iOS 7: my flattest 48 hours

how design can change your life

48 hours. In 48 hours I got used to the new super-flat design of my iPhone, and lived happy. 48 hours of wows for iOS 7. Then I had the feeling that it had always been that way. Of course, it couldn’t be otherwise!

It took me 48 hours to get rid completely of any sort of skeuomorphism and get immediately used to the super-flat UX. I no longer need any ornamental cue from things that were necessary in the physical world. It was so natural and so easy, like breathing. I just forgot the past, in a few hours. It could only be flat! It has always been flat!

It’s not only a matter of how it looks, but a wider and more complex changing of perspective. It’s the first attempt of bringing industrial design and UX design under the same roof. And this is not simple, nor easy, as the result still looks like an unpolished gem.

Design is a complex process, and stays behind every single, little detail. Design organizes, simplifies, synthesizes, builds up the structure that will support the whole system. And there’s nothing easy. It’s a matter of culture, knowledge, sensibility, and of course aesthetic too. It’s a long process, but when you reached the goal everything is so smooth, simple, easy.

Super-flat design is also great freedom. Freedom to use a third dimension for new, unedited, terrific things. We don’t know yet what to do, and how to use this dimension, but we know that it’s just a matter of time and creativity. Then anything can be possible. There’s a huge highway right in front of us, we just have to ride along.
