Adventures in arts and crafts iconography.

It’s no secret that I love Lyft. When I’m not Lyfting around town myself, I’m often telling others about the awesomeness of Lyft.

I recently came across this post by Jessica Watson that discussed a lovely conversation she had with one particularly angelic Lyft driver. It’s true that Lyft drivers can be angels, often going the extra mile to make passengers’ lives better and more interesting. Personally, I’ve had many Lyft experiences that have brightened my day. Among them, receiving a candy pack from Ky which included ‘Apple’ gum, riding to work with Eric and playing ‘name that tune,’ and interviewing Alejandra about her experience as a government employee during the shutdown.

This Halloween, I thought it would be a fun tribute to dress as a Lyft car. I also wanted to add one additional element to my costume to salute the concept of ‘Lyft driver as angel,’ a halo. A friend said that this was the perfect costume for me.

While the official Lyft logo is the floating pink balloon, Lyft has become renowned for its fleet of pink-mustachioed cars seen cropping up in city after city. These mustaches are a coveted item, and I have spoken to several Lyft drivers who’ve told me stories about people asking where their mustaches are from. Rather than trying to locate one of the iconic pink mustaches, I decided to make my own. I thought I could use cardboard and make pink mustache wings! Home made costumes are the best!

Here are some highlights from my project.

The beginning. Cardboard moving boxes I found in the garage. I had to find the perfect size. The folds made perfect flaps for flying.

The outfit. Pink shirt and white skirt. Pink = mustache. White = license plate.

Painted mustache wings. Magenta pink!

License plate and steering wheel drawing.

Sewing the wings together with pink string.

Accessories. Steering wheel and license plate. XOXO Lyft. Notice the Calyfornia spelling. Lyft is taking over the world!

Ta da! The finished product. Got a pic with Mike and the real deal mustache!
