  1. Please make any and all instructions regarding how to apply for a job clear, obvious and concise. Vagueness doesn’t help anyone. Let applicants know if you want everything in the same document or separate ones. Be specific about what mean when you say ‘references’. Do you want actual references or the contact details of referees?
  2. If you decided to use an application form, perhaps don’t layout and format it in Microsoft Word. Try Google Forms or another program.
  3. If you insist on using tables in Microsoft Word, make sure columns line up properly. Make sure applicants can actually type in the boxes. Perhaps don’t add in dotted lines either. They’re annoying.
  4. This is specific for job agencies: Don’t redesign my CV/ resume, please. If you want a one-page CV, I will give you a one-page CV. Just ask.
  5. Make sure all text is the same size and font. This includes job adverts, job descriptions and person specifications.
  6. Spell and punctuation check adverts, descriptions and specifications, please. Applicants work hard to make their applications almost perfect. Do the same on your side.
  7. Going back to job adverts, please…
