Vacation versus a Family Trip
There’s a difference between a vacation and a family trip. A vacation is lying by the pool with a cocktail in hand and not worrying about anyone drowning, while a family trip is a small child yelling, “I need to pee!” over and over.
Don’t get me wrong — I adore our family trips more than anything, but I don’t come back from them rested, tanned and caught up on my reading. Why do my kids need so many more things when they are in the backseat of the car than when they are at home?!
My husband Chris and I have been going to Miami for years. I just love the vibe there — it’s so relaxed and beautiful. (And the amazing food, natch). I’ve always thought of Miami as such a grown-up getaway, but this time we took the kids with us. It was amazing!
Did you know you can buy a day pass to swim at most of the hotel pools? We hung out at The Raleigh all day, even though we didn’t stay there. I mean, just look at this pool!
We all enjoyed seeing the amazing floating houses of Stiltsville. It used to be quite the hotspot for illegal gambling and drinking in the ‘30s. Most of the houses have been destroyed by hurricanes and fires, but the few remaining are a national park.
As for eating, you can’t miss with The Bazaar, Jose Andres’s restaurant in South Beach, or Yardbird. And you must get a cocktail at the Faena Hotel; it’s a little piece of 1950s South America.
It was so special for us to share this magical place with our kids. For the first time, this felt like a family vacation, not just a family trip. Here’s to more of that!
