Colleagues from Calderdale and Huddersfield Foundation Trust travelled over the US to visit two hospitals to discover how they use voice recognition and implemented EPR within their hospitals, all in aid to see how we can improve our own process and see where we can take voice recognition within our own Trust.

“The opportunity to visit the Nuance facility and two organisations that both use DMO and Cerner was very useful. IT illustrated what the technology is capable of and a taste of the next generation of DMA and DAX which will improve patient safety by gently reminding clinicians to add detail and progress to that keyboard less consultation. How facilities use DMO with Cerner certainly illustrates the art of the possible- one centre having Cerner for less time than us but have demonstrably done more with it and have good ways to show better clinical information, time savings and great engagement from IT, training (face to face) and their CMIO.”

Monday 24th February

Every successful trip never starts without a hitch, right?! Well this one certainly didn’t as on the day of the outward flight snow was falling down on Calderdale. Thankfully, the flight was delayed which meant we still managed to make our flight and safely landed in sunny Boston. Once we landed, we were introduced to the Nuance Team who were looking after us throughout the stay and we all settled into the hotel ready for the packed days that lie ahead.

Tuesday 25th February

We were very excited as we headed off to the Nuance headquarters in Burlington, which was a very impressive building, a little like Acre House LOL!

On our arrival we met Brenda Hodge, Chief Marketing Officer and Dr Reid Conant who is the MIO and a practising ED consultant. A tour of the head office was given where we met Jon Dreyer, Vice President, Solutions Marketing and the team who demonstrated the ambient clinical intelligence known as Dragon Ambient Experience, or DAX demonstration. This tech was so impressive, it recorded the conversation between Clinician and patient via a box on the wall with 16 built-in microphones. All the information captured was inputted into the EPR system.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Dr Conant who confidently showed us how the Dragon Medical One voice recognition software can be used within the Cerner EPR. He also showed us various tips and tricks regarding EPR. Ellen, Jonathan and I certainly didn’t hold back with our questions and left with our heads pounding with all this new knowledge.

Wednesday 26th February

Ellen, Jonathan and I visited Boston’s Children’s Hospital today. Their team was made up of Clinical Educators Informatics Specialists and Information Officers. This visit was a real insight to how an American hospital worked in comparison to how we work. We got to listen to how they arrange their training about EPR and how they work currently with the system. They are firm advocates of the Dragon Medical One software and absolutely love it in their day-to-day roles. We discussed the Dragon journey and got to see how this fit in with the paediatric workflow as well as the training programme and their integration with mobile technology. The day ended with a Q&A session with the staff which was really beneficial to us as it allowed us to dive deeper into how we can improve how we use EPR in our hospitals and what we’d need to do as a Trust to implement Dragon Medical One.

Thursday 27th February

For our final day we visited Concord Hospital where we met with Dr Clark, their CMIO, as well as their ER Nurse Manager, Clinical Systems Educator and Applications Analyst. The staff at Concord were so enthusiastic about Dragon Medical One and about EPR, they really seemed to have a good grasp on the system. They showed us round the ED departments and how EPR and Dragon is being using their day-to-day lives. We met various staff who showed us how they use EPR competently and also shared with us how they addressed issues with EPR and took the team forward. They explained the way they rolled out the Dragon Medical One throughout the Ambulatory and ED.

“The trip to America was really rewarding. Both Boston’s Children’s and Concord hospital was so welcoming and inviting to us all. They shared their knowledge and experiences of their implementation and go live for EPR and it was so refreshing to find out we shared the same experiences. During this trip we built some solid connections in the US, in both hospitals, and look forward to developing these further as we progress with advancing our own technology.”
