CareerVillage: A Q&A with Bryant & Jared

These stories are in partnership with Uncharted and Visible.

Visible is a new innovative, and community-driven wireless carrier born out of the belief that digitally driven consumers should be met where they are — on their phones and apps. Together, we created Visible Connect as a way to support nine nonprofit startups that use mobile tech to help people in need and bring visibility to issues like domestic violence, hunger relief, and civic engagement.

While Bryant and Jared may be from opposite coasts, one thing now constantly brings them together: their amazing nonprofit. CareerVillage is a platform where underserved students receive free career advice from a volunteer corps of more than 15,000 professionals who share their time, experience, and expertise. Learn what drives them, inspires them, and gets them about of bed each morning.

Meet Bryant, Education Manager at CareerVillage

Current location: San Francisco, CA

Hometown: Morgan Hill, CA

Describe your morning routine. Two snoozes, read the news on my phone, prep the coffee, shower, pour the coffee, drop my wonderful wife off at BART and then off to a nice commute to Palo Alto!

Out of all the causes to get behind, why career/school guidance for youth? I knew from a very early age that I wanted to help support young people. Immediately after college I embarked on a career as a High School history teacher to have an immediate impact. I’ve seen first hand in the classroom the lack of resources, guidance, mentors, and opportunities my previous students experienced and felt that CareerVillage was an ideal tool that could better the lives of all of my students.

Who inspires you? My family, my wife, Bruce Springsteen, Jason Isbell

If you weren’t working on CareerVillage, what other world problem would you want to tackle and why? Any problem that directly impacts underserved youth.

What’s the last book you’ve read or are currently reading? There There by Tommy Orange

Describe a moment you’re most proud of while working at CareerVillage. Getting back into the classroom and presenting the platform to students and seeing that “Wow” moment of: This is a website that really helps me gain access to something that I didn’t previously have access to.

What’s been the most surprising aspect of the Visible Connect experience? Every person involved 100% genuinely cares about the work. Visible and Uncharted team members are 100% committed to doing absolutely whatever they can to support us.

Coffee. Smartphone. Mattress. You can only choose two out of these items. Tell us which two and why. Coffee and Mattress; I would love to only read from print :)

Jared Chung at Visible Connect.

Describe your morning routine. Woken up by kids. Diapers. Breakfast. Feeding kids. Coffee. Cleaning up. Kids in trailer. Bike to daycare. Drop off. Try to prevent crying. Ride to work. Show up. Experience the sweet, sweet relief of being in an environment filled with mature adults. .

Out of all the causes to get behind, why career/school guidance for youth? I’ve been about it since the beginning. It was my experience as a kid. I was career oriented, mostly because my family was financially insecure.

Who inspires you? ET the hip hop preacher. My mother. Hans Rosling (RIP). The leaders of the civil rights era. My wife.

If you weren’t working on CareerVillage, what other world problem would you want to tackle and why? I’d probably be working on changing the culture of institutional philanthropy to reject old mindsets and embrace a culture of experimentation and R&D.

What’s the last book you’ve read or are currently reading? Winners Take All, by Anand Giridharadas

Describe a moment you’re most proud of while working at CareerVillage. I think when we reached our millionth user, it really struck me that this had surpassed every expectation I’d ever had at the start. It’s bigger than I’d ever imagined.

What’s been the most surprising aspect of the Visible Connect experience? How willing the accelerator team is to consider every idea.

Coffee. Smartphone. Mattress. You can only choose two out of these items. Tell us which two and why. Coffee. Smartphone. Sleep is overrated.
