A photographic essay.

Religion is at the crux of Western civilization, but many Americans don’t realize the depth at which Christianity has buried its beliefs and principles in their lives. In Spain, religion reveals itself more readily.
The medieval churches of old town Valencia house impressive sculptures and artifacts. The lighting and interiors of the churches, which are still used for daily Mass, create an atmosphere conducive to reflection.
A passionate dance associated mostly with southern Spain, flamenco is a breathtaking display of strength, rhythm and emotion. The dancers move across the floor with power and grace, luring the audience into their story with gestures and expressions that reveal a complicated love.
For a flamenco dancer, the strenuous dance is an empassioned form of self-expression that requires as much fortitude as it does physical strength.
Popular with the younger generations, the skate park in Turia Park is one of numerous recreational facilities along the 9 km green space that wraps around the city in a dry river bed, left behind after the Turia river was rerouted to avoid catastrophic flooding.
Although not taken as seriously by the bikers and skaterboarders who use the park, scooter riders still pull off impressive flips and tricks.
Because of the large variety of available activities as well as its relative safety, Turia Park is a favorite among families.
The narrow streets of old town Valencia are lined with apartment bulidings and storefronts.
Hidden spaces like this one, just behind the city’s facade, make room for important services that keep the city functioning properly.
Aquarius, the smaller orange boat in the background, rescued and then transported more than 600 refugees to Valencia. Turned down by Italy and Malta, they finally found refuge in Spain, where they were given medical treatment and a chance at a new life.
