We Used to Play Records

Side 1

We used to play records, one at a time
Back in the days, of unrequited love
Expressing our feelings, then was a crime
Our actions repressed, nothing to speak of

We used to have fun, so simple and true
Before we were out, verbally abused
Hide in the shadows, beaten black and blue
By words meant to wound, no longer excused

We used to play games, yes, most of us did
The innocent times, before lives complex
Oh, the happy days, of being a kid
Before confusion, puberty, and sex

We used to pretend, play straight as a line
Look in the mirror, we were so divine

Side 2

We used to be glad, to be who we are
Before the time came, to face what was real
It became so clear, we weren’t going far
We couldn’t hold hands, express what we feel

We used to try hard, in the face of hate
To smile and ignore, an unwelcome place
To live and let live, and accept our fate
Acknowledge our own, beauty and grace

This all long before, the pride and a flag
Those weekends so lost, before union came
Rainbows disappeared, unassuming tag
Love may have left me, my heart is the same

No longer pretend, no standing in line
Look in the mirror, we are still divine
