You wouldn’t steal a cow…

How I became a joker in the workplace

--

I believe most ‘jokers’ have grown up learning to take a joke. Along with a face looking like this;

for most of my teenage years and enduring Accutane for a year, I also didn’t grow in height after the age of 13!

You’ve really gotta hand it to short people…

Because they usually can’t reach it anyway.

These were some of my “short “comings (pun intended) and main topics for frequent jokes and comments.

Working as a woman in such a male-dominated industry also teaches you to have a voice, speak out and be confident.

Only 7% of students taking computer science A-level courses are female. Just half of the girls that study IT & Tech subjects at school go into a job in the same field.

Nowadays I give what I take, learnt to brush it off and have been able to laugh at myself from time to time and this is what has helped mould me into the current joker I am today.

I use the term joker lightly, I don’t spend all day joking and messing about but I do enjoy a good joke or some witty banter. My personal favourite, the dad jokes! They are short, like me, and usually a laugh out loud type joke although some of my colleagues may disagree!

When it’s a ‘not a joke’ joke

Rewind the clock back to 2018 when my team was based over at Oak House, I would bring my pint of milk in every Tuesday and leave it there until I was next in the office on a Thursday. At first, I was very much happy to do this but quickly the milk would be depleting. Although the majority of people would ask if they ever needed to borrow some milk, there were some people who’d presume they could use it without asking.

This is how #milkgate began for me… Some believe I was slightly overacting with this, but I think the message below is clear!

After seeing a picture of Halifax Police’s fridge I came up with a plan so that no one could ever use my milk without asking and with the help of my Dad (shoutout to James Town) the idea came to life and this amazing device was created!

I have to say the feedback I’ve had has been wonderful and surprising! Although this wasn’t a joke to me, the invention has put a lot of smiles on people’s faces, a not a joke joke!

And to end on a laughing note…

Here are a few of my favourite geeky jokes with one little change, as I’m all for gender equality I’ve replaced ‘he’ with ‘she’ as all these jokes used male pronouns.

  • Why did the programmer go to Specsavers? Because she couldn’t C#
  • The programmer got stuck in the shower because the instructions on the shampoo bottle said: Lather, Rinse, Repeat.
  • The oldest computer can be traced back to Adam and Eve. It was an apple but with extremely limited memory. Just 1 byte. And then everything crashed.
  • I love the smell of my F5 key. — It’s very refreshing.
  • Why did the geek add body { padding-top: 1000px; } to her Facebook profile? She wanted to keep a low profile.
  • Why was the JavaScript developer sad? Because she didn’t Node how to express herself.
  • Why did the developer go broke? Because she used up all her cache.
  • An SEO expert walks into a bar, bars, pub, tavern, public house, Irish pub, drinks, beer, alcohol.
  • What do computers eat for a snack? Microchips!
  • What’s Forrest Gump’s password? 1forrest1

This is now my 7th blog and if you are an avid reader of my posts, you will know I go the extra mile for a feature picture… so here are a couple of outtakes with the star, Peanut!
