A nation celebrates a milestone, a few companies decided to take advantage.

On October 17, 2018, Canada became the 1st G7 nation to legalize marijuana.

Whether you consume cannabis, believe in its legalization, are in Canada… or not, it was very hard to miss the news.

News outlets from everywhere were covering the story, long lineups at local Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) were a sight to behold, and all of social media had a (green) field day.

The excitement was not only limited to cannabis enthusiasts. Some companies, with no relationship to cannabis, took advantage of this historic event to engage with their audience.

Here are some that created quite the buzz!

1. Davids Tea

Natural wellness, baby. #steepteaeveryday (DavidsTea Facebook Page)

The Canadian tea giant went all in with this Facebook post, but without going overboard. The caption reading Natural wellness, baby. #steepteaeveryday plays with the concept that both marijuana and tea leaves come from nature.

And they jokingly remind you that their leaves have been legal (and around) for a long time.

I usually have coffee in the afternoon, and drink tea at night. Today I had tea in the afternoon. It wasn’t DavidsTea and I can’t fully confirm that it was because I saw this ad.

That being said, the power of advertising is a lot stronger on our subconscious mind than most of us think.

2. Kit and Ace

Kit and Ace Instagram Story (Oct 17, 2018)

The Canadian apparel brand did not hesitate to show its color. Publishing 3 Instagram stories of a green jacket and a hand in the pocket which conveyed how useful the jacket and its pockets now became.

They added a caption that reads “POCKETS WITH NOTHING TO HIDE” across the image.

And to top it off, they added a message saying “Keep your stash in our secure pockets. Your day is about to get a lot more chill” with a Canadian flag.

How much more proud can you get?

3. Toronto Police

Asking what to do with your frozen meat during a power outage is not a 911 call. Smelling weed coming from your neighbour’s home isn’t either. Cannabis is no longer illegal on October 17, 2018. Consumption is allowed for anyone 19yrs or older. Do not call police for this ^sm

Toronto’s police department chose to advise the public in a humorous manner on their Twitter account.

Most of us wouldn’t think to call 9–1–1 to ask about the preservation of your meat is a good idea, but apparently, someone did.

The confused woman looking at her carton of mushrooms adds to the comical nature of the post because the whole thing makes absolutely no sense.

The caption says “ Asking what to do with your frozen meat during a power outage is not a 911 call. Smelling weed coming from your neighbor’s home isn’t either.”

I think it drives the message home.

Don’t consume marijuana and drive, for real don’t.

4. Restaurants Valentine (Honorable Mention)

Restaurant Valentine, the Quebec franchise restaurant known for their poutine, posted a video on Facebook that played with the concept of steam emanating from the famous dish.

You can be sure that people will definitely be thinking about this once the celebrations die down and the munchies begin.

Please ensure you are aware of the law regarding the usage and consumption of cannabis. Details can be found here.
