I decided to model my persona based on my grandfather, who experienced drastic reduction in vision and hearing from a stroke. He lives with his son who helps him throughout daily routine, as he has trouble with mobility as well.

He is able to walk around by himself, but cannot walk out for long periods of time, especially without help.

As Gretchen mentioned, it is common for patients to check in with another helper(ie. family, friend, neighbor, hired caretaker, etc.).

Frances heavily relies on his son to not just navigate, but also with examinations, relaying certain messages from the doctor, and also retrieving medical instruction and treatment.

I decided to focus down on the examination and the check-out phase of a clinical times.

Gretchen mentioned that sometimes there is a conflict of emotions and expressions between the patient and their company, and sometimes the company would say/ask the doctor that contradicts the patients’ will. Deepan noted that it is important that the doctors always direct their instructions towards the patient, but this may not always be the case; especially with patients who are elderly or very young.

Patients will also have to retrieve treatment and medical instructions. Frances would also rely heavily on his son to do all of this, which results in the transfer of control over patient’s own health to this caretaker. What if the patient must administer the treatment themselves? What if they have questions/concerns about the treatment instructions?

As I’ve explored in previous secondary researches, one of the reasons patients with vision/hearing disabilities suffer from further complications and even early death, is due to incorrect administration of their treatment and misunderstanding medical instructions.
