Where do you stand on the Thortspace controversy or “Thortgate” as it is being called by a man out walking his dog in Wiltshire ?

There are reports coming out of Surrey that Thortspace has been making groups of people spontaneously jump for joy. Where do you stand on Thortgate ?

“Thortspace is beautifully designed and intuitive” says ListOfFreeware.com

But not everyone agrees !

Thortspace has been stirring up a controversy with mind mapping experts and aficionados — the “maparazzi” as they are sometimes known.

On the one hand:

“I’ll pass on thort, don’t go for subscriptions nor sending data to someone I don’t know. At least with Amazon, Google, Dropbox, Apple or big names there is some level of peace of mind. Don’t like the look either, neither videos/website nor the clunky product itself.”

(see http://www.outlinersoftware.com/topics/viewt/8061/7 )

Or take this review on playstore:

“Just too complicated - way too complicated to do basically nothing”

(see https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=thortspace.thortspace&reviewId=gp%3AAOqpTOG2kJ1Ti_1vPvmwYprCxPDEqYcF_hxzF88gTTeUOHB4mCuoplB6ffQnrNyaADdSEcLLX5xORUhwXp0xT1E )

(No, don’t hold back! Tell us how you really feel.)

On the other hand:

ListofFreeware.com says Thortspace is:

“… beautifully designed and intuitive 3D mind mapping through which you can create some very complex 3D mind maps.”

see:

and here is a quote from an email I just received:

“I want to personally congratulate your team on building what is nothing short of extraordinary in the space of mind mapping. I have seen a lot of mind mapping tools but the thortspace tool transcends them all — and in a big way.
This tool epitomizes software at its best. Easy to use, easy to learn, and easy to express oneself in.
Thanks again for such a rich user experience.”

If you’d like to make up your own mind — and I mean that literally! :-) — you can download the free Thortspace app (which incidentally will work fine as a standalone app, without any connection to our cloud service — which cloud service, if you do decide you want to use it, as it happens stores all its encrypted data on “big name” Google’s cloud storage) from here:

Install the Free Thortspace App on Windows, Mac, Android, iPad and Linux… The world’s first collaborative 3D mind mapping software. Breakthrough thinking, whenever and wherever it is needed most.

So why is it that some people like Thortspace so much while others don’t?

  1. Thortspace is a bit “quirky”.
We are working hard every day to make Thortspace less quirky, and take the quirks out of it, but when we started the Thortspace project we were taking on something extraordinarily ambitious and backed by almost no resources. So thank you for bearing with us, those of you that have done.
  2. If you want to edit Thortspace content, you have to install an “app”.
You can view Thortspace content in your favourite browser (as long is it supports WebGL — which is most browsers these days). But currently if you want to edit Thortspace content you have to install an app. This is another thing we are working hard on fixing.
  3. Not everyone “gets it”.
For some of us, the benefits of organising our thoughts into visual structures is obvious: better memorisation, better comprehension, discovering insights that you hadn’t see before… it doesn’t hardly even need to be said. But not everyone sees it that way.

In any case, let’s finish here with something light-hearted and our own little addenda to it …
