Human race extinction — now in just two weeks!
I’ve heard recently that highly mortal viruses spread much slower — for obvious reasons, as infected people rather die quickly instead of walking around the city and spreading the virus. It’s a kind of relief, on one hand, but it also leads to some scary ideas like the one below.
Imagine that one day, a virus appears — a mutated COVID-19 version or a different virus designed by some frustrated bioengineer. The new virus has a 100% mortality rate, but long, 2 weeks, incubation period. And it infects others very easily, through the air, just like COVID-19 does. You can be infected for 2 weeks, and only realize the fact when you’re already dying.
What would happen then? It would spread quickly through the world, and by the time we realize what happened, most of us would already be infected. There would be almost no time — days, weeks at most — to do any research on the virus. No point working on the vaccine, since it takes years to create and test it properly, and majority of people are already infected anyway. Once we realize what’s going on, the human race dies panicking already, desperately trying to find an effective cure within a few days, which obviously doesn’t happen.
In the end, the only survivors are native Americans, Aborigines and some primitive tribes living their slow and peaceful lives, completely separated from the “civilized” people. They will rebuild mankind, with a new set of values, allowing it to last longer this time, thanks to a completely different approach to mother nature: cooperation instead of consumption.
